Policy 1008 - Software Installation Policy

1.0 Purpose

This document details the policy regarding instllation of software in computer labs and multimedia classrooms as well as student, faculty, and staff personal computers.

2.0 General policy regarding the installation of software

All software installed on University owned equipment must adhere to the applicable software license guidelines published by each manufacturer or governing authority. Under no circumstances shall software be installed on University owned equipment without proper licensing or other form of consent from the manufacturer. The IT department reserves the right to refuse service and/or disconnect any system that does not adhere to this policy. The IT department also reserves the right to refuse to install any software when there are questions about the legality of the software.

 

2.1 Installation policy for instructor workstations

All software must be installed by the IT department or appropriate staff assigned to maintaining the facility. This is necessary to prevent unintentional disruption of use by other faculty and staff.

After the IT department is provided with the software, every effort will be made to install software within 1 week of notification, and verification of the license. Times may vary depending on the complexity of the package being installed.

No software shall be installed in the common access teaching labs unless it is to be used for direct support of class. The open access labs are the appropriate locations for this type of request.

Proof of license must be made available for any software to be installed. A copy of the license and/or release statement must be provided to the IT department prior to software installation.

No demo, trial, or unlicensed shareware software will be installed.

No software will be installed if it is deemed that system security will be adversely affected by the software, or if it requires adverse changes in the general security of the system in order to run.

While the IT department will make every effort to ensure that requested software will work with our configurations, the IT department may be unable to get a specific piece of software to work.

 

2.2 Installation policy for student computer lab computers

All software must be installed by the IT department or appropriate staff assigned to maintaining the facility. This is necessary to prevent un-intentional disruption of use by other classes.

Software will be installed twice a semester; two weeks prior to the term and seven weeks into the term. Requests to install software on those dates should be submitted no later than 4 weeks before the installation date. Patches, updates and security fixes are excluded from this policy.

No software shall be installed in the common access teaching labs unless it is to be used for direct support of lecture material. The open access labs are the appropriate locations for this type of request.

This is necessary to prevent un-intentional disruption of use by other faculty and staff. Specific machines may be identified in these facilities where users can install and test their own software.

Every effort will be made to install software as soon as possible. Times may vary depending on the complexity of the package being installed.

2.3 Installation policy for Faculty/Staff/Student computers

The IT department will assist if sufficient resources are available with the installation of software on faculty, staff, and student machines.

Proof of license must be made available before any software will be installed.
